National Clearinghouse on Child Abuse and Neglect Information Gateway to Information-Protecting Children, Strengthening Families

Gateways to Information: Protecting Children and Strengthening Families

The National Clearinghouse on Child Abuse and Neglect Information and the National Adoption Information Clearinghouse are services of the Children's Bureau, Administration for Children and Families, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. The mission of the Clearinghouses is to connect professionals and concerned citizens to timely and well-balanced information on programs, research, legislation, and statistics regarding the safety, permanency, and well-being of children and families.

The National Clearinghouse on Child Abuse and Neglect Information (NCCANCH) was established in 1974 by the Child Abuse Prevention and Treatment Act to collect, organize, and disseminate information on all aspects of child maltreatment. The legislation that established a national clearinghouse for information relating to child abuse is available online.

The National Adoption Information Clearinghouse (NAIC) was established by Congress in 1987 to provide free information on all aspects of adoption. The NAIC website provides comprehensive information on domestic and intercountry adoption. The legislation that established the National Adoption Information Clearinghouse is available online.

Philosophy

Childhelp USA® credits its success to its founders' visionary beliefs, which are the heart of the organization:

  • Childhelp USA believes that every child has a unique contribution to make to the world. We do everything within our power to help each child heal and develop self-esteem to reach their God-given potential.
  • We believe unconditional love is the foundation upon which all healing begins. The entrance of each Childhelp USA facility features the words "All Who Enter Here Will Find Love."
  • These children, who have seen the worst that life has to offer, deserve the best that we can provide while they are in the care of Childhelp USA.

The CCRC is concerned with children and adolescents, from birth through age 17, and all their crime  victimizations, both within and outside the family, both known and unknown to law enforcement.
These include:

  • Criminal acts as defined by law, such as sexual assault, abduction, theft, robbery, and aggravated  assault against children
  • Child abuse in all its forms--physical, sexual, emotional--and child neglect
  • Child-to-child violence, such as peer and sibling assaults, which would be considered criminal if  the parties were adults
  • Indirect victimization, where children witness or are affected by the crime victimization of a family member or friend

On behalf of the Government of Canada and its Family Violence Initiative (FVI), Health Canada operates
the National Clearinghouse on Family Violence (NCFV). The NCFV is Canada’s resource centre for
information on violence within relationships of kinship, intimacy, dependency or trust.

On behalf of its 12 federal FVI partner departments, the NCFV collects, develops, and disseminates
information on family violence across the country and abroad.

NCFV resources and services are available free of charge in both English and French.
